About the Conference

On 15 May 2019, Inter Alia team members Nikos Pasamitros and Revekka Kefalea presented the project European Cultural Heritage Onstage and the GLAM Hack initiative respectively at the Biennale of Western Balkans one-day Conference in Ioannina, Western Greece.

The Conference titled Tradition Anew: Documenting cultural heritage and artistic creation -interdisciplinary approaches, contemporary media was part of the BoWB activities, and was organised in the light of the International Museum Day 2019 and that year’s subject Museums as cultural hubs: the future of tradition which was chosen by the International Council of Museums (ICOM). The Conference included talks, a GLAM Hack Workshop and screening of short documentaries.

In the sessions

In the morning, in the conference space of the Silversmithing Museum, among other presentations, Nikos Pasamitros presented the rationale, theoretical background, aims and activities of the ECHO project.

In the afternoon, at the Pyrsinella mansion, Revekka Kefalea held the GLAM Hack Workshop What-the-hack?!, in the context of which participants became acquainted with digital archives and repositories of cultural heritage, as well as with Creative Commons licenses and creative reuses of their content. In addition, with the use of online image processing tools, they created their own derivative artworks, which you can see here.

In the evening, Vasiliki Maltasoglou of the Balkans Beyond Borders organisation introduced three short documentaries that were presented in past versions of the BBB Short Film Festival. The one-day event ended with the screening of the creative documentary “Dark Vein”, created by Stratis Vogiatzis and Giorgos Samantas, and produced by Inter Alia and Caravan Project in the framework of the ECHO project.

Special thanks to all the members of the Biennale of Western Balkans team for inviting us to participate in the Conference, and especially to Elli Leventaki for her kind support along the way!

Special thanks to Georgia Angelaki (Research Associate at National Documentation Centre) for contributing her knowledge and experience to the GLAM Hack workshop!
