Training Course, 3 – 11 August 2019, Turin, Italy

Eliza Gkimitzoudi: This project had the goal to bring together 32 people (most of them youth workers) from 12 different countries to discuss about equality, freedom, tolerance and human rights. Most of the activities had to do with supporting the sense of belonging and citizenship, and they helped us get familiarized with the situations happening in countries of the Eastern World and central Europe; either tackling war, Islamophobia or the refugees.

We all arrived in Turin after a long trip, and we were anxious to meet everyone else without really knowing where this trip will take us. Apart from the pizza and pasta that we were expecting to eat. And the gelato! Never forget the gelato.

The first two days we were still unsure what was happening, as the activities were non formal and free in a way that we did not feel like it was a training. Then it started – we started to feel like a team, to sit together and discuss about things in your life that you don’t easily talk about, even to your closest friends. And that was the magic of this course; it made us feel accepted and valued, it felt like we belonged to a family and that our voice was heard.

The facilitators were open to hear our ideas and change things, they had prepared a range of activities that contributed to our critical thinking and the way we use our body and we were able offer our own input and mentally travel to 11 different countries. No other time in my life I slept so little and had so much energy! We had the chance to see Turin either with organised outings or by ourselves, to choose things we wanted to do (like experience a football match of Turin FC!) and express our wants and needs freely.

Most importantly, we learned many things about ourselves and how to respect and support the others. For me, that is the most valuable experience.

Giorgos Tsivakis: From August 3rd to 11th, 2019, I had the opportunity to participate in the Training Course “O brother, who are you?” in Turin, Italy! Almost 30 people from 13 different countries came together for a tiring, but fun and teaching week!

During these 7 days I spent 192 hours of meaningful and true work with the rest of the participants. I had the opportunity to appreciate from the outset the values of respect, acceptance and friendship. At the same time, thanks to two excellent trainers, I enjoyed every part of this program from beginning to end. Even when in doubt, they disappeared immediately because of the cooperative and shared desire of all of us for the final goal. Thoughts, ideas and opinions circulated in the training room all the time. Each activity gave me the opportunity to think and do things I had never thought of before. I had the opportunity to get in touch with theatrical methods, to communicate without talking, to improvise and much more!

I can say with great confidence that this experience has been unique to me. For all the above reasons, I want to thank some people. Μy 30 friends who participated, Eliza with whom we were the Greek team, the two trainers, Altino and Enrico. Finally, I would like to thank Boyka and Inter Alia for giving me this opportunity and I hope we will work together again in the future!
