The phenomenon of “green” and “blue” growth has gained considerable ground in political debates and the business world. However, what happens when the proposed development plans do not address, but reinforce environmental problems? At the same time, forms of social oppression, such as discrimination, labour exploitation, the looting of natural resources, the privatization of the commons, contribute to ecological degradation and social injustice.

We had the pleasure to participate in two parallel events in Athens and Kalamata with an interactive workshop to explore these issues and propose solutions that safeguard the right of communities and citizens to live in a clean and healthy environment, regardless of race, colour, gender, ethnic origin, or income. In Athens, we participated in “What “Commons” do we have?” organised by Goethe-Institut Athen and LUDD Lab. That was a celebration of the commons and citizens’ efforts to claim back the public spaces.

In Kalamata, we joined the 1st RETHINK GAIA FESTIVAL organised by the Re:think – Fifa urban permaculture Farm, a real ecological boost for the city of Kalamata.

Finally, to support care for the environment, we organised two online seminars, Environment and democratic participation using digital technologies (in Greek) and “Open Data for Sustainability – Digital Advocacy” (in English) that focused on digital practices and tools that could be used to raise awareness and advocate for environmental justice and sustainability.
