Disinformation: how to recognise it and act against it | February 29 @ ETERON

On February 29, Inter Alia hosted the seventh ‘I Vote for Myself’ workshop titled ‘Disinformation: How to Recognize It and Act Against It,’ facilitated by Kostas Karpozis, Assistant Professor at the Department of Communication, Media, and Culture at Panteion University. The Inter Alia team started off with introductions and an interactive exercise asking the participants what disinformation was to them. Multiple answers were heard during this part of the workshop, but all of them had the same base – disinformation is false information intended to mislead.

After that, Mr. Karpozis spoke about the upcoming worldwide elections and the role disinformation has played in politics in the past, using the example of the US election back in 2016. We also learned about how we can spot disinformation and fact-check it.

Throughout the lecture, the professor referenced different examples of artificial intelligence misuse. At the end, he showed us the capabilities of this technology by helping us create photos, videos, and speeches of a political nature, which left us with a feeling of fear about what the future will look like in the digital age.

During the workshop, the participants had a chance to interact with the AI tools that the professor presented, ask questions, and discuss disinformation as well as its role in politics. This was especially valuable since all the participants came from different countries and thus had different experiences to share.
