Femscapes of Persistence and Prospects: A 3-day multimedia exhibition at the heart of Athens

On March 8 – 10, the ground floor of Bagkeion, a historical building and cultural centre in Omonia square of Athens, was filled with our Femscapes – our visions and narratives of possible feminine futures.

Femscapes presents a multimedia collection of intimate narrations of femininities spread across generations and age periods, across countries of origin and countries of residence, and most importantly across words and worlds. Finding tools to recognise the oppressive teachings that narrow our space and the energy to overthrow them, their stories establish and challenge “truths”. They guide us through experiences shared, stories re–remembered and pieced together.

Individuals, amateurs and professional artists drift  back into their first memories from childhood, and their favourite songs from adolescence, stare at the problems of now and intensify the glare at their desired futures, through 22 artworks. The choice of tools is as diverse as one can imagine, including a video poem, paintings, photography, a manifesto, a poem, digital art, music, a short documentary, a forum theatre performance, a durational performance and a dance choreography.

Fed by a mixed sense of urgency, fragility, excitement and hope, we employed quiet and slow methods of creation with the aim to turn our Femscapes into a modest intervention yet significant for the life-paths of involved individuals against the monopolisation of our futural thoughts and creativity. This exhibition was a result of an ongoing process, taking place in five different countries and including five different groups of young femininities who share a local struggle.

Following up on the creative process and aiming for the desired change, the local groups are ready to launch their campaigns. The “Super FEM” project continues with a series of training sessions that will equip them with the necessary tools to raise their voices for their personal and collective goals, transforming ongoing struggles into a rewarding process of learning.

The exhibition and performances were organised as parallel events of PDSFF24 | Love & Revolt.
