I vote for myself!

I vote for myself | Redefining a common path to 2024 EU elections

EU elections are approaching! Next June, all European citizens will vote and choose 705 Members of the European Parliament that will represent EU citizens in the European Union for the next five years.

Are we prepared to vote? Is there an alternative way to get ready for such an important date, overcoming individualism and choosing a collective journey to elections

As a Civil Society Organisation, Inter Alia believes in the active participation of young people in society, through traditional and alternative ways of making their voice heard.

“I vote for myself” is our brand new initiative: a one-year programme that will last from September 2023 to May 2024, thought for and shaped with young people.

Which are our objectives?

  1. providing information on EU elections, reasons why and ways of voting, European parties and EP political groups, role of MEPs, EU’s decision making processes and the impact of its policies.
  2. creating space for active participation and interaction of young people, discussing ways of active European citizenship that can be an alternative to traditional/formal political participation.
  3. critically exploring the EU as it is today, stimulating debate on future expectations and hopes and promoting alternative ways for reading everyday events that happen in Brussels and that have direct impact on our personal experience.

How will we do it?

10 activities, through diverse and creative educational methodologies, aiming at exploring alternative avenues for active European citizenship, discovering the EU in its impact and structures, and especially engaging in debates about the current state of the EU and our future expectations and hopes.

What is it all about?

  • EU basics: What is it and how does it work? What are European parties and who are MEPs? EU elections process & difference with other electoral systems. Elections 2024: what changed after 10 years?
  • What does the EU do and what is the impact: What is the local impact of policies? What are the implications, benefits and costs? For who? Do EU Member States respect their obligations? Can citizens have an impact on how the EU works at the local level?
  • Participation: Voting vs not voting: Is voting a right or an obligation? What motivates people to vote? On the basis of which values? How do people feel about specific topics? Which alternatives to representative democracy? How to recognise misinformation and avoid it? How do the different European parties see participation? What kind of participation do they promote in their agendas?

Who is it for?

Young European citizens (18-30) who have the right to vote in the EP elections, first time voters, high school or university sutdents in Greece and across the EU, young activist and youth organisations.

Should you have experience or knowledge about these topics? Not at all! This programme is for whoever is interested in learning, as well as in challenging their own views and conceptions about what it means to be a European citizen today.
