This panel discussion is a comprehensive exploration into the interconnected, overlapping, complementary aspects of violence that derive from structural properties and systemic functions of our societies. In specific, participating speakers will delve into the intersections between climate crises, popular development, and political sovereignty, with a particular emphasis on their implications within the context of the Global South. Using feminist and decolonial critical frameworks, the panelists will also address connections among multiple crises of today.
Moreover, the discussion will examine links between violence and hegemonic masculinities, as well as the role of youth in confronting visible and invisible violence. Nevertheless, the primary objective of this panel is to navigate alternative discourses and future-oriented transformations that can facilitate shared responsibility, justice, and equity in socio-ecological, socio-political, and interpersonal dead ends.

Max Ajl
Max Ajl is a Senior Fellow in the Department of Conflict and Development Studies at Ghent University and a researcher with the Tunisian Observatory for Food Sovereignty and the Environment. He is an editor at Agrarian South and Journal of Labor and Society, and has written for the Journal of Peasant Studies, Globalizations, Review of African Political Economy, Middle East Report, and other scholarly and popular journals. He writes on agrarian questions and intellectual history of the Arab region. He has been active in anti-war and anti-Zionist politics and is the author of a recent book, A People’s Green New Deal.
Emilia Reyes
Emilia is Programme Director of Policies and Budgets for Equality and Sustainable Development, at Equidad de Género: Ciudadanía, Trabajo y Familia (Gender Equity: Citizenship, Work and Family). She is Co-Convenor of the Women’s Working Group on Financing for Development, as well as a co-lead of the Economic Justice and Rights Action Coalition in the UN Women’s Beijing+25 process. She is coordinator of the Campaign of Campaigns, an initiative that aims to promote cross-movement mobilization around macro-economic and environmental issues. She’s a Contributing Author in the segment “Gender, Climate Justice and Transformative Pathways” of the IPCC report: Climate Change 2022: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability. For five years she was an Organizing Partner of the Women’s Major Group for the 2030 Agenda; for two years she was Co-chair of the High-Level Political Forum’s Major Groups and Stakeholders Coordination Mechanism. She is a member of the Steering Committee of the Civil Society 7.
Pierre Smith Khanna
Pierre Smith Khanna is a historian and political ecologist with a Masters in Political Ecology, Degrowth and Environmental Justice. Formerly a humanities teacher in an alternative international boarding school, Pierre has a deep interest in education and encountering novel ways in which students and teachers can learn together in an environment free of fear and competition. He has co-developed and taught the curriculum for humanities and ecology to young adults (Brockwood Park School ), co-organised and facilitated the degrowth Summer School (2019) and co-coordinated the Political Ecology, Degrowth and Environmental Justice Masters program (2019-2022). Pierre has directed a feature-length documentary “ Fairytales of Growth ” which explores degrowth and climate change activism and can be watched online for free. He is currently a PhD student at Coventry University, researching Sustainable Masculinities and Environmental Education.
Amerissa Giannouli
Amerissa is a Community Engagement Advocator. She is a project manager and a youth worker at Inter Alia. With her work she aims at critical youth empowerment and socio-ecological transformation. She holds a B.Sc in Economics, specialized in Business Economics and Finance and a M.Sc in International and European Economic Studies, specialized in European Economic Policy from the Athens University of Economics and Business. She has been a certified trainer for adults of non-formal education since 2016 and she has created, coordinated and facilitated a variety of non-formal activities in Greece and beyond. She is currently completing the master’s programme on Degrowth: Ecology, Economy and Policy offered by the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (ICTA-UAB) of the Autonomous University of Barcelona and Research & Degrowth academic association. Her master thesis has been focused on youth participatory spatial planning.

Decolonial Radicality for the Global South and North by Emilia Reyes
The global challenges require of us all collective action, but it cannot be business as usual. We need to promote ethically a decolonial and anti-imperial radicalization of our analysis and actions, that will be guided by a southern framing based on justice, reparations and system change. We will start exploring what are the differentiated steps the Global North has to take for a future centering liberation, and the paths the Global South have ahead.
Climate Change and National Liberation by Max Ajl
This presentation will examine the climate problem as it interacts with questions of third world popular development and political sovereignty, or the classic problematics of national liberation. It will examine what a popular autonomous development program looks like, and the political tasks necessary to achieve it North and South.
Degrowth and Violence: Addressing the elephant in the room by Pierre Smith Khanna
After a brief introduction to degrowth, I’ll look at the viability of achieving degrowth in a world ruled by nation-states and realpolitik in which might is right and ethics are swept under the carpet. Is non-violence a viable strategy for transformation, or is violence a necessary evil to overcome the civilizational impass we seem to have reached?
Youth in the face of neoliberal violence by Amerissa Giannouli
This intervention aims to explore how young people have been experiencing both visible and invisible forms of violence within the context of neoliberal policies. It seeks to raise awareness about the importance of creating critical spaces to challenge the growing influence of the far-right and fascist politics in socio-ecological matters, and foster alternative discourses that promote shared responsibility and conviviality.

Αυτή η συζήτηση αποτελεί μια σφαιρική διερεύνηση των αλληλένδετων, αλληλοεπικαλυπτόμενων, συμπληρωματικών πτυχών της βίας που προέρχονται από δομικά χαρακτηριστικά και συστημικές λειτουργίες των κοινωνιών μας. Συγκεκριμένα, οι συμμετέχοντες, συμμετέχουσες, ομιλητές και ομιλήτριες θα εμβαθύνουν στις διασταυρώσεις μεταξύ των κλιματικών κρίσεων, της αυτόνομης λαϊκής ανάπτυξης και της πολιτικής κυριαρχίας, με ιδιαίτερη έμφαση στις επιπτώσεις τους στο πλαίσιο του Παγκόσμιου Νότου. Χρησιμοποιώντας φεμινιστικά και αποαποικιοκρατικά κριτικά πλαίσια, οι συμμετέχοντες ομιλητές και ομιλήτριες θα εξετάσουν τις συνδέσεις αυτών των σημερινών πολλαπλών κρίσεων.
Επιπλέον, η συζήτηση θα εξετάσει τους δεσμούς μεταξύ της βίας και της ηγεμονικής αρρενωπότητας, καθώς και τον ρόλο της νεολαίας στην αντιμετώπιση της ορατής και της αόρατης βίας. Ωστόσο, ο πρωταρχικός στόχος αυτού του πάνελ είναι η εξερεύνηση εναλλακτικών αφηγημάτων και προσανατολισμένων στο μέλλον μετασχηματισμών που μπορούν να ενισχύσουν την από κοινού ευθύνη, τη δικαιοσύνη και την ισότητα σε κοινωνικο-οικολογικά, κοινωνικο-πολιτικά και διαπροσωπικά αδιέξοδα.

Είναι συντονίστρια του Campaign of Campaigns, μιας πρωτοβουλίας που στοχεύει να προωθήσει την κινητοποίηση διασταυρούμενων κινήσεων γύρω από μακροοικονομικά και περιβαλλοντικά ζητήματα. Έχει συνεισφέρει ως συγγραφέας στο τμήμα «Φύλο, Κλιματική Δικαιοσύνη και Μετασχηματιστικές Διαδρομές» της έκθεσης IPCC: Climate Change 2022: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability. Για πέντε χρόνια ήταν Οργανωτική Εταίρος της Μεγάλης Ομάδας Γυναικών για την Ατζέντα 2030. Pierre Smith Khanna
Ο Pierre Smith Khanna είναι ιστορικός και πολιτικός οικολόγος με μεταπτυχιακό στην Πολιτική Οικολογία, την Αποανάπτυξη και την Περιβαλλοντική Δικαιοσύνη. Πρώην καθηγητής ανθρωπιστικών επιστημών σε ένα εναλλακτικό διεθνές σχολείο, ο Pierre έχει βαθύ ενδιαφέρον για την εκπαίδευση και συναντά νέους τρόπους με τους οποίους μαθητές-τριες και δάσκαλοι-ες μπορούν να μάθουν μαζί σε ένα περιβάλλον χωρίς φόβο και ανταγωνισμό. Έχει εκπονήσει και διδάξει το πρόγραμμα σπουδών για τις ανθρωπιστικές επιστήμες και την οικολογία σε νέους ενήλικες (Brockwood Park School), συνδιοργάνωσε και διευκόλυνε το Degrowth Summer School του 2019 και συντόνισε το μεταπτυχιακό πρόγραμμα Political Ecology, Degrowth and Environmental Justice για την περίοδο 2019 με 2022. Ο Pierre έχει σκηνοθετήσει ένα μεγάλου μήκους ντοκιμαντέρ « Fairytales of Growth » το οποίο εξερευνά τον ακτιβισμό της αποανάπτυξης και της κλιματικής αλλαγής και μπορείτε να το παρακολουθήσετε δωρεάν στο διαδίκτυο. Αυτή τη στιγμή είναι διδακτορικός φοιτητής στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Κόβεντρι, ερευνώντας την βιώσιμη αρρενωπότητα και την περιβαλλοντική εκπαίδευση.
Αμέρισσα Γιαννούλη
Η Αμέρισα είναι Συνήγορος Κοινωνικής Ενδυνάμωσης και Πολιτικής Συμμετοχής. Είναι υπεύθυνη έργων και σύμβουλος νέων στην Inter Alia. Με το έργο της στοχεύει στην κριτική ενδυνάμωση των νέων ατόμων και στον κοινωνικο-οικολογικό μετασχηματισμό. Είναι κάτοχος πτυχίου στα Οικονομικά, με εξειδίκευση στα Οικονομικά και Χρηματοοικονομικά των Επιχειρήσεων, και μεταπτυχιακού τίτλου στις Διεθνείς και Ευρωπαϊκές Οικονομικές Σπουδές, με εξειδίκευση στην Ευρωπαϊκή Οικονομική Πολιτική από το Οικονομικό Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών. Είναι πιστοποιημένη εκπαιδεύτρια ενηλίκων της μη τυπικής εκπαίδευσης από το 2016 και έχει δημιουργήσει, συντονίσει και διαχειριστεί μια ποικιλία μη τυπικών δραστηριοτήτων στην Ελλάδα και όχι μόνο. Αυτή τη στιγμή ολοκληρώνει το μεταπτυχιακό πρόγραμμα για την Αποανάπτυξη: Οικολογία, Οικονομία και Πολιτική που προσφέρεται από το Ινστιτούτο Περιβαλλοντικής Επιστήμης και Τεχνολογίας (ICTA-UAB) του Αυτόνομου Πανεπιστημίου της Βαρκελώνης και την ακαδημαϊκή ένωση Research & Degrowth. Η μεταπτυχιακή της εργασία έχει επικεντρωθεί στον συμμετοχικό χωροταξικό σχεδιασμό των νέων ατόμων.
