Let’s talk about degrowth | The series

Let’s Talk about Degrowth is a series of workshops aiming to ignite thoughtful discussions and raise critical questions about our growth-dependent society, eventually leading to collective actions. We will use interactive activities and informative materials to build a space for collective sharing.

Duration:

April – November

Targeted audience: 

  • People interested in socio – economic issues / environment / degrowth (the workshops will be Athens  in person unless stated otherwise). 
  • People studying related topics like environmental studies, degrowth, social studies, economics, political science, etc. 
  • People advocating on topics related to environmental justice, sustainability, economic democracy, and well-being.

  • Get-to-know each other: Values, motivation, expectations 

During our first meeting, we will begin by introducing each other and reflecting on our roles within our societies, where we are, and where we would like to be. We will talk about our personal experiences in relation to the environmental movement, share our thoughts and concerns. Participants will be invited to make an assessment of their realities with respect to socio-ecological issues as part of being prepared for the next session.

  • Collective exploration of degrowth and critiques to growth

During our second meeting, we will make a bridge between personal experiences on socio-ecological issues to broader systemic critiques and introduce the degrowth discourse. Participants will be invited to explore further the particular critiques and learning materials will be provided. This will also be the preparatory work for the next session.

Session 4: What does degrowth look like? 22 May 2024

  • Collective mapping of practices, policies, socio-economic relationships, ideas for change.

During this session, we will try to recognise and map how degrowth looks like in our local and contexts in order to reveal potentials for upscaling and change. Participants will be invited to explore further alternatives to growth based economies and degrowth experiences from diverse localities and contexts. Learning materials will also be provided.

Session 5: How do we get there? 5 June 2024

  • Participants will assess how degrowth alternatives could work in specific cases and realities making plans for actions to possibly advocate or research further on policy proposals that could support degrowth transformations.

Action Phase | July 2024 – November 2024

  • This is the period where the action plans will be implemented. Participants will be invited to contribute in the organisation of Roots Winter School 2024
